When engaging with a software development company they will almost certainly say that you can build your dreams within their solution. But at what cost?  Much of the best of breed generic software systems from the major software vendors are actually frameworks that can be tailored to specific business need.   On the face of it this is good right?  The problem is that in order to achieve this flexibility in architecture, it is necessary to put in place very stringent interfaces and gateways.  In effect, you have to implement your custom modules in very specific ways, driven by the software itself.  Seldom is this the best or most efficient way to implement your custom requirements.  At best this leads to clunky and in-efficient user interfaces and at worst you pay for an unreliable and weak solution that fails to implement custom processes effectively.

We learned very early on that building custom solutions is challenging. It's challenging because every customer is different and every customer needs to leverage software in different ways. The trend for software vendors, in recent years, has been to simply stick their heads in the sand and ignore this reality.

In doing so, they ignored their customers and believed that offering an 'off the shelf' solution that can only be tweaked within set parameters will give the customer what they want. To compound this situation further, the belief that integrating a plethora of disparate systems together to create a robust business solution, is a recipe for disaster. Of course the truth is that this simply doesn't work and businesses pay the price by having systems that are inefficient and not fit for purpose.
